In 1908, Mexican capitán Ramón Arnaud and his adolescent wife depart for the small atoll in the Pacific Ocean, known by the Spanish explorers as the Island of Pasion. Acompanied by eleven soldiers and their families, the captian has orders to defend the island from an improbable French invasion. With its dangerous reef of coral and a enclosed lagoon, the island is threatening and inhospitable and their new inhabitants must fight to survive. They manage to create a viable community; but between the political upheaval in his own country and the beginnings of World War I, they are themselves forgotten in the middle of Pacific.
